Recently I saw a paper called Design Engineering in the Age of Industry 4.0. Thinking about my research on major selection in my study abroad application, I found that the letters EDBI have been frequently recombined in the interactive design system in recent years. To explain, E=engineering, D=design, B=business, I=innovative/integrated.
In particular, there are many similar majors in the National University of Singapore, and this year a new integrated design was opened. In fact, several majors in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have the same concept, such as IBD/SSD/ISD for Mdes degrees and IME for Msc degrees. These letters are just a revelation, and they do not have to be used to express this concept.
In the final analysis, in recent years, majors have increasingly tended to establish an interdisciplinary environment to cultivate engineers and designers with practical application capabilities, or should we say compound talents, including encouraging them to combine business thinking and adapt to market needs. In the era of digital innovation, students are also encouraged to jump out of the boundaries of traditional disciplines, integrate different fields to generate new solutions to problems, and cultivate innovative spirits. Even these majors may be combined with other disciplines such as law and art.
Here are a few examples, such as
D+B: Innovation in the field of design combined with commercial applications to promote the development of new products or services, such as the user experience (UX), service design, business consulting, etc. that we often mention.
D+I+E: Innovative technology combined with engineering design to produce new technological solutions, such as green energy, the Internet of Things or the innovation of automation systems, and give birth to new hardware product designs, such as the application of smart devices or environmentally friendly materials.
B+I: Business and innovation are combined to promote innovation in business models, such as digital marketing strategies, social e-commerce, etc., to solve problems for enterprises and develop unique products and services.
There are many possibilities, and even the letters mentioned are not included. At this point, I would like to give you some inspiration based on my application experience. Since famous schools around the world are also combining these letters, can we also have such a mindset to create projects in our portfolios? At the same time, this is also the creation of a personal setting, just like the MBTI personality, divide yourself into a basic positioning, and then open your opening project based on your own background.
Therefore, through these simple examples, I would like to give you some small inspirations. First, position yourself, then take action. First, find the persona of your own portfolio, and then use this persona to unfold your story. This way, it will be easier to impress the professor.
