Foreword
The two ends of the narrative and history of the intertwined, starting from the fictional garbage city world in 2199, tracing back to the birth of the garbage in 1943 and to the evolution of the adventure playground, from the rise of the promotion to the gradual disappearance of the children from the former kind of free and fearless creativity, the adventurous spirit was also gradually lost, the crazy inner world of the children and who knows.
Under this fiction and background, a narrative idea is interspersed, questioning what kind of state the children's new playground will be in the city, and I try to conceptualize a utopian world belonging to the children themselves, carrying the spirit of the past and combining it with the current background, and searching for a suitable site according to the design concept.
The narrative is driven by a trilogy, from the birth of the paradise to the escape and finally a creation, through the different characteristics of the material to put forward different ideas, using discarded materials as a medium as an entry point, the children can build their own world, they can go into different worlds of the strange and the light, and so on, here is not only a kind of recycling of the waste material, but also a kind of creation of the inner world and the fulfillment of the dream, the making of the dream! The contrast between the inside and outside of the city, the different states of day and night will be a kind of inner connection between parents and children, and the birth of Dream City may become one of the most beautiful stars in the city, which belongs to the most beautiful stars of the children.
Prologue
Through the text of a story named "047", it is told that in the year 2199, the world is filled with garbage, and a ship named "047" carries this pile of garbage and takes the children to escape from the world and come to a lot of fantastic islands, where this pile of garbage gets a new life, and the children escape from the cruel reality and come to a new life in the islands, where the children get a new life. The children escape from the cruel reality and create freely in this fantasy land. The ending is left to the imagination, and it seems that the children who miss the boat will not be able to enter this reborn world again.
The following text--
Act--
"The boat is coming," the children call out.
In the year 2199, people were running around in a world full of garbage, and the initiator of "World War III" was the garbage products that were abandoned by the people. Many resources were cleared out, and the huge amount of unregulated burning of garbage caused huge pollution, so it was stopped, and in return, the garbage monsters were piled up...
"When you board the ship called "047", you can go to the new world in your heart. Get on board, children."
The ship would carry this load of garbage in the harbor every day, and even though it seemed like a futile effort, the captain of the ship would tirelessly repeat the daily trips to and from the harbor, and strangely, the garbage would go with the ship to who knows where, and even more miraculously, the ship would often bring back a load of fruits and vegetables and all sorts of new and exotic things for the children whose homes had been taken away from them by the garbage.
Setting sail -
On board, another group of children boarded the "dream boat", the fog in the water was so thick that it made people delirious, and many children fell asleep on the rocking boat. I do not know after a long time, the fog retreat, and behind the disgusting city also disappeared from view, in front of the eyes of a small island, the whole thick forest to surround the island, seems to be a kind of mysterious things gathered in the forest. The ship drove into a cave, and in the midst of the gloom it came to a sudden stop, and came to rest in a beam of light.
The captain asked, "Are there any children off the boat?"
The children, still in a state of amazement at the incredible things that had happened.
One five year old asked, "Where is this?"
"This is Baiguo Island, those who want to stay can get off the boat, after cleaning up some of the garbage it's time to restart the boat and head to the next place."
=A couple of bearded old men suddenly appeared and greeted the group of kids from who knows what century they had come from, and in passing they dialed down the iron slag on the stone wall, and a stone cavern door suddenly opened while the captain gestured and dialed the button, and the entire iron box of garbage was dumped into the stone cavern, and the kids freaked out, and got into a big, loud ruckus again.
"Goodness, is this where the garbage from our city comes."
"Does this look like our home isn't coming back?"
"Where is this place?"
The old guys laughed a few times, "Come on kids", when another door was opened and they led the kids inside, through a pathway with candles lit on the walls, the kids were amazed by the sight, as if it was a giant underground factory, no, actually more like a magic house.
No, it was more like a magic house, filled with gears, bubbling pools and mixers, the whole house was filled with all kinds of steam, the children in the house were happily running around passing around the "magic products" from the "magic machines", and when they looked back at the piping, they realized that the stuff was freshly unloaded from the ship. Looking back at the piping, it was the garbage that had just been unloaded from the ship, impossible to see in the darkness, but now that the lights were on, it was obvious that it was a lot of food waste, and it was being brought into various containers that they didn't understand, and it seemed that the children here were working together very skillfully, and even using some strange terminology.
An old guy suddenly snapped, "To introduce to you, this is an underground production house on Hundred Fruit Island, there are more up there, these things will also be transported further up through the gears, the children in our island are very happy every day, they love the magic of turning waste into treasure, these things are mixed and re-processed in these machines invented by our ancestors to eventually turn into all kinds of fertilizers for the island, the It grows many fruits and vegetables, which is why we are called the Island of 100 Fruits."
"I hope you like it here and have fun with them, if you want to leave then you will have to wait for the next boat to pick you up."
"I want to stay here," one of the children immediately picked up.
"But where will the other children be taken."
"Here, everyone has different proficiencies, some people grow fruits, then they need to build houses, they need all kinds of materials, we like to use different materials to try to make interesting houses, and also here, we will organize all kinds of information from your world as memories, and of course, we also have little children who are good at playing music, it's nature's music... "
When the children heard these words, it was as if they were really dreaming, and the uneasiness they had previously felt about the original city was instantly gone, and turned into a surge of strength in their hearts.
Elderly people with children on the elevator to the island, this piece of scenery like the name, really is a fruitful, here the tree is huge, fruit and the previous city to see a little different, strange, colorful, garbage into the fertilizer has such a great magic, really incredible.
"We ah, rely on the boat we built to communicate with each other, as well as, the annual event, you just about to catch up with you."
"Yes, it's a coincidence that it's going to start tonight."
"Wow, I want to stay forever!"
"By the way, does that ship carry all the other trash to the different islands?"
"Yes that's right, once the garbage is sent on board the ship the garbage is automatically categorized and assigned to each island that needs that kind of garbage, and sometimes we bring some of the things we make to the captain so he can give them to you guys, we need you guys, you still have unlimited potential to discover and create..."
"It used to be an island, then a catastrophe separated us, alas, it couldn't be helped..." the group of children were already running around excitedly to many places before they even finished listening, it was an immensely new world for them, and maybe for the adults still in the ruined city as well, but the captain wouldn't bring them over, for he was afraid, afraid that one day these islands, too, would become a garbage heap irretrievable.
The pageant -
When it was dark, the old man took the children to another island in a boat he had built himself, and on such a quiet night, it was brightly lit, and this was what the old man meant by "The Fest", where each island would provide some of its own materials to rebuild some of the fest's scenes, which were dotted with strange houses, houses made of sweets, houses made of clay, small mountains covered with red copper, big apples hanging in a great big sky, and big apples under the water, and big apples in the sky. big apples, and whales hanging from pale trees, and the laughter of the children was all over these strange forms, and the new children were quick to run into the crowd and play with them.
This really really seems like a dream, it seems like 047 is bringing the children to a piece of pure land that belongs to their future rebirth, whether it is a beginning or an end, whether this garbage war in the city is destroying the children or bringing rebirth to them, perhaps only the children know.
Reincarnation
"047" has long taken those children who did not get off the boat to continue to other islands to clean up various parts of the garbage, class after class of children looking at the novelty of the island to embark on their different paths, every day carrying the children's boat through this misty waters, laughter makes this cold and silent place has a new life again.
"Are you sure you don't want to get off the boat, children", asked the captain of the 047, "isn't there an island you want to explore?"
"We're too scared to go down there..."
"Well then...you made your own choices, so I'll take you back to the harbor."
The captain took the children, who had never gotten off the ship, back through the mist, and saw the "garbage city" that they had left in the morning.
The children said goodbye to the captain and fell asleep on the dock floor, exhausted.
At dawn the next day, the ship's siren sounded again, the children were awake, saw "047" again, and looked back at the city behind them, which had no place to stay.
"Why don't we ask the captain to take us to the island again, think of how much more horrible it is here than there."
"I regret it too...want to get off the ship and check it out."
"Captain Captain, we want to get on the boat!"
The captain stopped the boat and said, "Where are you kids going, I have to take out the trash! This is no place for you to be."
"Ah...didn't you take us to a lot of islands yesterday, and other still more kids."
"Yeah."
"Yeah..."
"What yesterday, I just came to this city today, don't get in the way of my work, I'm leaving after cleaning up the garbage, so you guys hurry up and go home."
"047" finished loading the garbage, set sail again, sounded its whistle again, and faded away in the water antenna. The sun rose, but it was not warm at all.
Origins - The Dream of the Playground
Junk Playground - a key point in the history of playgrounds
The Danish landscape architect Carl Theodor Sorenson noticed that children liked to play everywhere, but in the playground he built, in 1931, he imagined "a garbage playground where children could create and shape, where dreams and imaginations became reality". Why not give the children of this city the same opportunity to play as the children of this country? His original idea began the Adventure Playground movement.
The first adventure playground was opened in 1943 in Emdrup, Denmark, during the Second World War. 1946, Mrs. Allen of Hurtwood visited Emdrup from England and was impressed by the "junk playground". She took the idea to London. These "junk playgrounds" were called "adventure playgrounds".
Emdrup's first adventure playground in Copenhagen, Denmark was called "Skrammellegepladsen". The Danish word "Skrammel" means garbage, reusable garbage, etc. and "Legepladsen" means playground. It is worth noting that the word "Skrammel" has a positive connotation in Danish, whereas the word "trash" has a more negative value in English. For many years, Emdrup also used the term "construction" playground.
John Bertelsen, Emdrup's first host, also coined the term "skrammologi" or "junkology" to refer to the philosophy and theory of junk play.
The first adventure playgrounds in Britain were called "junk playgrounds" or "junk playgrounds", and in 1953, Mrs. Allen and Sir George Pepler of Hurtwood met at lunchtime to discuss and agree on the new terminology of junk playgrounds. Mrs. Allen felt that the junk playground deserved a better name and settled on the term "Adventure Playground".
Notting Hill Adventure Playground - circa 1960s
Mrs. Allen, left, and Sorensen, right, left.
Excerpts from the evolution
- The difference between vandalism and crime was not clear and many children became unruly and anti-social
- Emdrup's success lay in its negotiation of the line between "vandalism and crime".
- The war awakens fears of chaos within children, and children playing in the rubble becomes a powerful metaphor for reconstruction.
- Mrs. Allen: "It's better to have a broken bone than a broken spirit."
Evolution from trashy playgrounds to adventure playgrounds and back again to a final gradual decline
- Many local authorities used this as an excuse to withdraw support for adventure playgrounds due to so-called safety concerns
- Camden Council dismantled its adventure playgrounds and replaced them with after-school clubs with fixed equipment
- Designers and equipment manufacturers stole designed versions of adventure play equipment
- In the 1970s, there were nearly 500 adventure playgrounds in the UK. Today, there are fewer than 150
Voices of return and visions of rebirth
Playworker Sherriff has dedicated his life to the philosophy of junk play. Children need to be able to take risks, they're born to grow up and we know it's good for them," he says.Wendy Russell, a lecturer at the University of Gloucester who has just completed a project to collect memories of adventure playgrounds in Bristol and Gloucester, says the city is becoming more and more hostile to young people. increasingly hostile. "Children don't fit in the public realm, they're not welcome on the streets. These once deprived areas are now stale and have different priorities. There's a cautionary attitude toward children who are not middle class."
Late in Sorensen's life, wrote about trashy playgrounds: they can dream, imagine, make dreams and imaginations come true, and in any case, it's a reality where the child's mind is completely fulfilled ...... It's clear that children thrive here, feel good, they unfold, they live. " Of all things, I realize that the trash playground is the ugliest, however, to me, it is the best of my work. Trash playgrounds and adventure playgrounds fade away, yet the spirit is still carried on... Let's come back to the present moment and try to can seek a utopia of spiritual resurrection, an escapist rebirth underneath the bustling metropolitan centers and skyscraper city gardens.
City Information
In the bustling Guangzhou metropolis, Zhujiang New City is the CBD of the city. The waters between Haixinsha and Guangzhou Tower are mostly used as the route for night tours of the Pearl River, and is also one of the routes for water buses, with the transition between Haixinsha and Guangzhou Tower piers being made by boat. There are skyscrapers everywhere and highly modern planning, the once scenic Asian Games site, the city's center high-rise landmarks, the city's prosperity as far as the eye can see.
Contrasting History and Reality
For the venue, it is an escapist choice. The waters between Haixinsha and Canton Tower are mostly used as a route for Pearl River night tours passing through, and is also one of the routes for water buses, and the transition between Haixinsha Pier and Canton Tower Pier can be made by boat. Here there is no crossing of the flyover, no underground tunnels, in the prosperous location, dense towering skyline, this water is more like an isolated, difficult to step on at will piece This is a piece of land that only boats can walk up to, highly planned urban gardens are given by the adult world, can this water become a free utopian world for children.
Assumptions and questions
Returning to the site of the present through imaginary fiction and real history, a hypothetical go-around is proposed to respond to the children's temporary absence from the bustling city, a variable wall surrounds this playground, inaccessible to adults. During the day, the adults on the river see the barrier of the blank wall, inside the wall is an island belonging to the children's freedom, a world of light and weirdness. At night, the wall is lowered as if it were a brilliant flower blossoming on the river, which is a crystallization of the children's power, the contrast between the outside and the inside, the isolation and the blossom all represent a return of a powerful spiritual force, a recapture of the freedom and fearlessness, the adventurous creativity.
Rebirth Trilogy
Birth
Speaking from different identities
A group of people with different professional identities who speak their minds, engineers sighing at the demolition of buildings, workers numb to the mechanized factories making pieces, chefs discarding many ingredients with few imperfections for the best dish, musicians taking to the streets in pursuit of the sounds of nature and so on, who see that these materials are constantly being wasted and becoming mechanized procedures, lamenting the loss of that beauty.
The beauty of wasted ingredients
The wonderful aroma and color of food is enough to form a wonderful picture, rubber has always been a kind of carrier for people to fly to the sky and enter the sea, plastic creates children's childhood dream of toys, yet it is pulled by the engineered market, metal's unique sound can already plant the seeds of music, building materials hide the precipitation of stories and historical reflections, paper also contains memories, yet it can become the carrier of space! ...They can't bear to see the discarded materials, they collect them in a certain place in the city, and set up six kinds of camps to collect the discarded food, metal, plastic, paper, building materials and rubber. They wanted to see these wastes reinvented, they thought of the children who dream and create, and the same need for a place to create to fulfill their dreams.
The formation of order
And so the City of Dreams began to be born, with two towers forming on the river, six lighthouses scattered around, different platforms over-connecting between them, twisted rock formations interspersed between the towers and the platforms, a stretch of water in the middle opened up for boats to pass through, a cogwheel-running system of mechanical gondolas running through the land on both sides, and finally a world of creativity for the children, with submerged rubber cylinders and rock formations, and the high-rise Plastic City's Evolution...
Enclosure
Adults can't enter this place, they can only watch it from the river, it belongs to a free world that belongs to the children, and a changeable one.
The wall wraps around this paradise, during the day it creates this isolation, while at night it will be opened and lowered, this children's dream world blossoming on the river, illuminated, a spiritual flower that exists and seems not to belong to the city.
Blueprint conceptualization
Envisioning the operation of Dream City through the relationship of profiles, the children's crazy world unfolds.
On the day of the celebration, Dream City was born.
Escape
Boat
In the center of the city, in the middle of the bustle, the children come to the pier to wait for the arrival of the six boats. The lighthouse becomes part of the pier, and the children can go up to the top of the tower to see what's going on.
Setting sail
The boats are coming and they will follow them to the waste camps of the city, to enter the world of abandoned objects and to leave the bustling city center behind.
Dreaming
The Arrival
After embarking on their search, they take the scraps to the watery rebirth of this city center. Upon entering Dream Maker, the boat disembarked the children, while the boat began transporting the scraps to the various storage tanks, and with an underwater transfer system and a transportation tower, the scraps were transported to different places on the upper levels, where the children ran and cheered on the rocky earth, as they rode a mechanical cable car shuttle and climbed towards the lighthouse to the various different platforms.
The Tower.
Crossing this stone bridge, there is a tower to the sky here, it is attached to many strange things colliding combinations, there are no platforms here there is no stopping place, the only way is to climb all the way up to the top of the tallest tower, this is the very top of the city of dream making, breaking through the hole, the children stand on the platforms and look out at the city in the distance.
Shuttle and Transportation
The children climbed the tower, rode the mechanical rollerblades and even went crazy climbing the steep rocks to get to the top of this dream world, the transportation tower transported the scrap upwards and when the tower doors were opened, the children drove the flying transportation carts to help load and transport the scrap to wherever they wanted to go.
Flying Dreams
Waste rubber is recycled into inflatable suits for children, they will be attached to a power unit by rubber strings and jump into this rubber tube that can be submerged underwater, with many exotic rubber balls attached to the walls to give them strength and cushion as they try to explore underwater, while the other part is made into a balloon, they sit in the assembled rubber ring and ascend into the sky along with the balloon as they try to maneuver to reach a different experience. different experiences.
Plastic City
The huge plastic city above is a space for children to build. Children manipulate machines, discarded plastics are synthesized into pieces of different shapes and sizes, they bring them to the plastic city to build it again, with the help of flying machines, they try to drill holes, join them together, they can frantically dig holes in the walls, build new plastic staircases and so on! ...
Paper is also one of the materials they use to build this plastic city, and the piles of discarded paper can be processed in the machine using different liquids, or solidified into shapes or soft pieces, or they can be giant puzzle pieces of paper's remaining memories.
Orchestra
The sounds of nature may add life to this playground. Underneath the giant metal loudspeakers are the seeds of music in the minds of the children, who use the machines to find the beautiful sounds in the discarded metal and construct their own percussion instruments, which they will fix with a plastic base. Standing inside these huge amplifiers, a crazy "metal" performance will begin.
Vapor Mania
The unique colors and scents of the discarded fruits and vegetables are extracted by the machine, the children are the leaders of this laboratory, they remix the colors, they can spray the colors for their free world, the scents are processed and mixed by the synthesizer, the children are crazy to create a feast of scents, they are the scents of nature, they are so sincere and warm.
Return
There is also a secret place hidden here, an underwater rocky world, remember the children under the rubber tube, when the device was triggered on them, the rope was untied and they were sprinted into the buffer room, thus coming to this secret place, and this transportation tower is not only transporting the waste materials, when the door of the upper tower opens and the waste materials are reached, the children can follow the up and down cycle of this tower to the underwater world, while some of the recycling towers are being processed and blended by the synthesizer. This underwater world is a return to the original garbage playground, of the six materials only the building materials are transported underwater, they are the remnants of many urban stories, some kind of history, in this underwater rock layer, children seem to be back to the In this underwater rock layer, the children seem to go back to the scene of the 1930s and 1940s, facing the ruins of the buildings and seeing freedom and fearlessness. Gazing at these abandoned building fragments, the children see again the hope of remaking and constructing a small world in their hearts.
Curtain
In the daytime, the wall separates the city of dreams, and the projector occasionally flashes a picture of the parents by the river. Although the children are escaping, perhaps there is a thought hidden behind the escape, that when the children really go out to create and take risks on their own, the parents will be tense, excited, or surprised, and that this "mirror" is like a real-time silent movie, and perhaps at some point they will recognize the parents' half-heartedness. This "mirror" is like an instant silent film, perhaps recognizing half of their parents' faces at a certain moment, and what will the children think? At night, the lights of the Dream City are shining, the walls have been shrunk underwater, and a flower blooming in the river is in bloom, which is not only comparable to the beauty of the high-rise buildings, but is also the release of the madness, fearlessness, and great power of the children's inner spiritual world. And this time, the people around see the figure of the children, their creation and madness is a movie of its own, they are the dominant person in this movie.
The day's madness comes to an end again, the sun is about to rise, the sky is incredibly warm, the walls of Dream City go up again, and a new day begins.
Conclusion
This design is based on the experience of the historical context and the phenomenon of the return of the junk (adventure) playground to protest against the existence of the problem, with two narrative texts combined to make a utopian vision to discuss, many problems can not be solved, a beautiful vision more to remind and tell people that there are still many great potentials for children may not yet be discovered, the text refers to the gradual disappearance of the junk playgrounds, perhaps it is because the times have changed and made it difficult for him to survive, but it is also because of the change of the times, that it is difficult for him to survive. The reference to junky playgrounds in the article is a sign that they are disappearing, perhaps because the times have changed and it is difficult for them to survive, but at the same time, the more overprotected the children are, the more freedom they have in the city, and the street protests in Europe are a sign that the children are getting more freedom on the streets of the city that they never got on the streets of the city, and that there is a kind of atmosphere in which they get along with each other as equals and can forget about the backgrounds that they have. The word "garbage" itself is an attitude towards nature, children need to be in touch with the products of nature, even the obsolete, their hearts may not feel the same as adults, and it is difficult for us to really enter into the hearts of children, but the history also shows that such a place is like a spiritual utopia for children, so much so, that they can be released from their hearts, their little bodies, and their minds, and their hearts. Here the heart is unleashed and the great power of the little body is tapped.
I have come up with an idea through the imaginary construction and the real past, but this idea is also a response to the children's inner world, and at the same time, I play with the medium of discarded materials, which leads to the question of what would happen in such a world if we could help the children by some means and allow them to be freer to create, to explore, to take risks, and I respond to this result through a beautiful hypothesis. I also responded to this result through a beautiful hypothesis. In this hybrid world, children are free, experience unprecedented adventures, without adult supervision, their inner strength is amplified, and they return to that free and fearless state of mind, while the use of waste materials is created by the children's hands, helping them fulfill their dreams. Creation can be both material and spiritual. Taking risks and exploring the unknown can also be considered as a kind of creation, a kind of creation that can only be understood by children.
In the end, this is an open-ended proposition, and perhaps the final answer should be interpreted by more readers.
